2016 was the year of the oils. We saw a spike in new oils being introduced into mass markets for every day consumption, but when studies began to surface about coconut oil not being as beneficial as was thought, we decided to look further into the others. Read below for a list of oils you can find in your local market and their benefits.
First, let’s talk about coconut oil…..
Coconut oil increases bad cholesterol and has more saturated fat than butter without any known favorable offsetting benefits. Initial studies that started the coconut oil trend claimed that coconut oil aided in weight loss. This is believe to be because the studies used a coconut oil that was 100% medium chain triglyceride, which may speed up metabolism. The average coconut oil only has 13-15% medium chain triglycerides.
1. Avocado Oil
Avocado oil is one of the most effective at increasing HDL (the good cholesterol) and is packed with oleic acid (omega-9s) which is responsible for lowering blood pressure, helping to eliminate plaque from the arteries, enhancing mood and boosting cognitive function.
Individuals consuming this oil will benefit from improved skin, improved nutrient absorption, reduced arthritis symptoms and a free-radical fighting boost. Avocado oil also contains lutein which is vital to visual health.
2. Sunflower Oil
Sunflower oil is rich in Vitamin E which can help prevent heart disease and boost your immune system. When you consume this oil, your skin is also better protected from the sun because Vitamin E helps to neutralize free radicals.
Sunflower oil is also packed with unsaturated fats which can boost your energy levels.
3. Olive Oil
Olive oil is a classic. Like many other oils, olive oil is great for preventing heart disease but also for maintaining a healthy digestive system
4. Pumpkin Seed Oil
Pumpkin seed oil is high in vitamin E, A and omegas like most other oils but also high in tryptophan which promotes better sleep and lessens anxiety.
Pumpkin seed also contains a high level of zinc which can help manage hormones and may actually increase hair in those suffering from hair loss by 40%. This oil can also help treat urinary disorders and regulate bladder function.
5. Almond Oil
Almond oil is very high in unsaturated fat which helps to lower bad cholesterol and raise the good cholesterol. Almond oil also has a lot of Vitamin E which is great for your hair, skin & nails.
This oil can help to regulate blood sugar levels too which protects your body from diabetes. Finally, almond oil is great for keeping your colon healthy
6. Rice Bran Oil
Rice bran oil has a good amount of oryzanol which is an anti carcinogenic and is five times as effective as Vitamin E in an antioxidant capacity. Oryzanol has been proven to help protect the liver and thyroid as well.
This is by no means an exhaustive list of oils. Many others have the same benefits: high omegas, a lot of Vitamin E and helps to manage cholesterol. Other oils we love include: flaxseed oil, hempseed oil and fish oil.
